Fios install on Feb 14th

I will be getting fios installed on the 14th and have a question.
What is the best service to pick: Verizon\yahoo or MSN?
Do they offer news groups?
I want to use my own router I have the USR5461 much better then the D-Link they offer is the installed going to give me alot of crap about that?
I have Comcast now and looking forward to giving them the boot.

There are a bunch of threads here on Yahoo & MSN vs base Verizon.

Yes, they offer newsgroups. news.verizon.net is the server.

Let the installer use their router and set everything up. You can swap out routers after the tech leaves.

Fios install on Feb 14th - Verizon FiOS (3)You actually do not have to use either. I refuse to allow Yahoo or MSN to gum up my computer and didn't install either one. My home page is just Google.

Well 2 things happened today, my fios installer was right on time and did a bang up job, I took a vacation day so I could play after he was done. It took about 2 hours to complete (Easy install) he did a very good and neat job and let me use my router USR5461. The service is very fast 15 down on every speed test and about 1.8 up, I think I need to tweat my MTU in the router it is set for 1492 i believe. I am abit confused about the service, I can just use verizon and I did not install any software but the web interface is bad for email. Or I can install yahoo or MSN and create new email accounts but that sounds a little crazy. Not sure what to do. Does verizon have a pop 3 mail server? I will post some pics tomorrow. Oh the second thing happened while my install was going on I received a call from a company I really wanted to work for and they asked me to rush in for an interview that seemed to go real good. Normally I would not be home but I was today thank you Fios

Your router runs PPPoE which uses a MTU of 1492. Because your router runs PPPoE, all the computers connected to it don't need to. They run DHCP and they get their IP addresses from the router.

You should have received a packet with info in it. For Verizon email, incoming.verizon.net is POP3 and outgoing.verizon.net is SMTP and you need to specify your id/password. Configure any email program you want.

Thanks, I found the verizon website that gives all the info, I had my user name a password. Still not sure about the service I want MSN or Yahoo or just stick with Verizon, seems like a waste not to use one of them.

I personally stay far away from those software that ISPs give you. With broadband all you need is a web browser. I recommend FireFox, because thats what I use for my browsing and it is a million times better than Internet Explorer

Howard
I agree with fios crazy download firefox from mozilla.com and use it as your browser. You can use there Thunderbird email (I do it works great) or use microsoft outlook. Don't bother with the yahoo or MSN software they give you

Once you have firefox setup go into tools-options-general tab and you can use anything for your home page (just type in a address) I use www.my.yahoo.com for that but you can use anything.

Enjoy

Heck I don't even use the router Verizon supplied me with. I completely rewired the topology of my network around Verizon's
D-Link router. Spent months on the phone and e-mailing. Turns out using their setup caused me more headaches than it was worth, because the outside IP was at the router level, certain attacks were getting through the router above and beyond attacks it can handle causing the router to crash and reboot.

Put my old Topology back in place with two NIC's and Server 2003 as DHCP and ran the firewall at the IP level I could completely control. Turns out I was getting attacks on port 6000-60,000 that the D-link didn't recognize as a flood and passed it right on through until it's internal buffer flooded and it crashed, and because of PPPoE their router failed to redial for two minutes because their service uses PPPoE and somewheres down the line, the system thought the previous session was still active and wouldn't let me connect.

I use little if anything an ISP provides me with nowadays, I would have tracked my problem down months ago had I ignored Verizon's requests to use their supplied router or I couldn't get support. When I did, all I got was misleading information and having tickets closed without me saying "it's fixed now". The last time I talked to Verizon, the person who was looking at my issue, only had a history going back barely a week....what happened to the history of over a month?

Bleahs to both ISP based hardware/software, if at all costs, avoid both, and run what you know is best for your setup.

I don't think you need to avoid ISP hw/sw. I think that is too general a statement. The good news is you can do whatever you want.

Wait. You set it up this way right after you got your service up and were getting disconnects with this setup. That's why you put the DLink back in front.
